MATCH REPORT: Leek Town vs Port Vale

13 July 2019

Port Vale made it three wins in three for their pre-season campaign with a /// win over local side Leek Town.

The weather was behaving itself and the pitch was looking fantastic, so it was a game set up to be played in perfect conditions.

New signing David Amoo came close to giving Vale the lead just five minutes in after Trickett-Smith played a clever over the top of his former teammates at the back.

Amoo took the ball neatly in his stride but the ball bouncing down off his chest made it difficult for the winger and he sliced his effort over the bar.

When it comes to Tom Pope scoring he usually only needs one chance and the balls in the back of the net, but on this occasion, he needed two bites at the cherry.

Cummings, on trial for the Vale, worked the ball well down the wing and clipped it in the Vale captain but he could guide his header wide of the post.

Annoyed at himself for missing, Popey made no mistake with his next effort. Niall Green's attempted header back to the goalkeeper was, unfortunately for him, misdirected into the path of Popey who adjusted his body well to tap the ball into the net.

He could've had a second just moments later. Amoo once again at the heart of the Vale's dangerous attack, showed great footwork to cut inside into the box and tee it up for Pope, but the striker smashed his effort against the crossbar.

Like the Kidsgrove game, John Askey opted to rotate his side and introduced several new players in for the second half.

Amoo was one of the few that remained in the side for the second half and continued to show the good form he produced in the first half, linking up well with the likes of Mark Cullen and Scott Burgess.

Vale dominated the majority of the second half but would've been frustrated they couldn't finish off some impressive attacking moves.

Amoo and Cullen found themselves in good positions and had chances to increase Vale's lead, but couldn't find the killer finish.

Tom Conlon is only known for scoring absolute rockets for the Vale and came very close to doing so yet again! Cullen and Hurst linked up well with a good little passage of play before finding Conlon 25 yards from goal, his powerful effort looked destined for the top corner but the goalkeeper did well to tip the ball over the bar.

Vale's persistence at goal was eventually rewarded thanks to David Amoo. It was Burgess and Amoo linking up well once again, with the midfielder threading the ball through to Amoo inside the Leek box and he managed to squeeze the ball underneath the goalkeeper and into the net to double the lead.

Leek did manage to pull a goal back with a few minutes remaining thanks to a fantastic finish from Aaron Botts. The striker cut inside onto his right foot inside the Vale box and smashed it into the top corner.

Up next for the Vale, it's Fleetwood Town in the first pre-season game at Vale Park.
