Last Time We Met: Crewe Alexandra

20 September 2018

Port Vale face Crewe Alexandra this Saturday in their first local derby of the season, but what happened last time the two sides met?

I'm sure the memory of last season's meeting with Crewe at Gresty Road is still fresh in the mind's of all Vale fans as we prepare to face David Artell's side this weekend.

It was honours even last time the two sides met at Gresty Road, as goals from Tom Pope and Antony Kay were not enough to secure all three points, evenutally drawing 2-2.

Crewe took the lead early on last time out through Ryan Wintle though a penalty from the captain levelled things up as both sides headed in at half-time with one goal at peace.

With 20 minutes to play in the second-half, a Kay wonder-goal put Vale into the lead for the first time. A deflected cross fell to the experienced centre-midfielder 25 yards out from goal, and Kay made no mistake half-volleying into the far corner off the post.

Though it was heartbreak for Neil Aspin's side as Crewe secured a point in the dying embers, scoring with just one minute of added time left.

The boss will be hoping his side can replicate the score-line the last time Crewe faced the Vale at Vale Park, running out 4-2 victors in the Football League Trophy.
