Neil Aspin wants to return to the December form

Neil Aspin is hoping that his Port Vale side can get back to winning ways and replicate their form over the Christmas period.

The Valiants are without a win in 2018 and will entertain Exeter City tomorrow night in what could be a vital match in the running towards the end of the season.

The gaffer is hoping that his side will be willing “to fight and scrap” to the very end, following a good comeback at the weekend against Stevenage.

“Against anybody we can give a good account of ourselves,” said Aspin.

“Everyone wants us to get a result, it’s very frustrating but, we have to be prepared to fight and scrap. I think the players have shown that in previous games and as long as we have that – we can give ourselves a chance.

“You can go to clubs lower in the table and expect a result, but at the level we’re at, we don’t have any divine right to win any games, we’ve got to play to our best.”

In previous weeks, the gaffer has said that it doesn’t matter where the opposition is in the league table and will only concentrate on his own side’s performance.

He said: “It doesn’t matter who we’re playing against, we respect all the teams.

“A team at the bottom can beat a team at the top, we just have to concentrate on our own performances and do our jobs properly.

“If we do that, we will get a result.”

Aspin also paid credit to striker Donovan Wilson who could feature in tomorrow’s League Two clash. The on-loan forward scored his first goal for the club in the late comeback against Stevenage.

“Donovan has got great ability,” he added.

“He’s a talented player and took him on because he can score goals. It’s a different game altogether compared to Under-23 football at Wolves.

“On Saturday, he did the job we wanted him to do and he got the goal which will do him good for his confidence.”
