“Excellent performance” in hard earnt win says John Askey

21 August 2019

Port Vale manager John Askey says if his team keep working hard and playing how they have been then there is no reason that the positive results will not continue after defeating Forest Green Rovers in style.

Last night saw a trio of firsts take place at Vale Park, as Port Vale picked up their first win of the 2019/20 season in game that was also the club and manager John Askey’s first ever win over the Green Army.

Speaking after the game, an impressed Askey praised his team for how well they all played, controlling the game for the majority of the 90 minutes, having eight more shots than the visitors and five more efforts on target.

The gaffer commended the quality of football played by his team whose hard work throughout the game resulted in a deserved three points, thanks to Richie Bennett’s diving header and David Amoo’s thunderous strike, with the boss highlighting the performances of the scorers and Cristian Montano in the game.

He said: “It was an excellent performance, I thought the players, especially first-half, played as good football as you could expect from them.

“A lot of chances created, a lot of crosses went in and they worked really hard again, so I think they got what they deserved.

“We had numerous chances through good play and if we keep doing that, we’ll be ok.”

A pleased Askey was not surprised to have picked up the points as he knew the wins have been coming after consistently good performances, adding how key it was to bounce back from the Salford City heartbreak with a win.

The aim for the gaffer is for the team to now maintain this momentum, aggression and desire, and sustain good results, starting with Saturday’s away trip to Grimsby Town where they go full of confidence.

The confidence comes from the way the team have started the season according to Askey who believes the players they can go anywhere without fear and get their first away win of the season against Grimsby.

He said: “It’s not easy when you go to Salford and you get a kick in the teeth like we got, it just shows great character from the players, they’re working so hard and if they keep doing that we’ll get results.

“I think you look at the results tonight, there’s some strange results in our league, anybody can beat anybody, we’ve just got to make sure we’re at it.

“We go there [Grimsby] full of confidence, we’ve not lost yet in the league so there’s no reason we can’t go there and perform.”
