Port Vale overcame Bury 1-0 last weekend as Neil Aspin's side extend their unbeaten run to four games in all competitions, and the boss was over the moon with his side's performance.
Vale welcomed an in-form Bury to Burslem last Saturday, with The Shakers unbeaten in seven in all competitions before the tie. Despite weathering a huge amount of pressure during the first-half, The Valiants headed into the changing rooms with the tie goalless at half-time.
With just six minutes gone into the second period, Tom Pope scored his sixth goal of the season to put Aspin's side into the lead, though that doesn't tell the whole story.
The Valiants put everything on the line to ensure they hold onto their slender lead and defended all the way from the front to secure all three points over Ryan Lowe's promotion chasing side, and the boss has commended his team's determination to grind out the win.
He said: "Today was a very difficult game. To give Bury credit, I thought they were really good. I've watched them before and I knew they were going to be difficult opponents today.
"But I can't fault the effort and the application of the players, I thought they worked tremendously hard.
"They defended the goal well, blocked shots and as I say, when the chance came along, it's a great finish by Tom to get us the three points."
The win over Bury now ensures that The Valiants have kept four clean sheets on the bounce in all competitions, and takes us three unbeaten in the league.
Following the result, Aspin's side now have a slight break in order to prepare for a huge couple of weeks as we welcome both Notts County and Sunderland to Vale Park, all in the space of a week.
Having got the win over The Shakers, the boss has now claimed that the first round FA Cup tie with Sunderland is irrelevant until we've faced Harry Kewell's Notts County.
He said: "You can only look at one game, you can forget about Sunderland.
"It's all about the Notts County game next. It's an important game against obviously a big club and that's all we can focus on at the moment.
"We have to try and make sure we get some points out of that one."
