Scott Brown: "Colchester are the best team we've played this season"

11 January 2019

Port Vale return to league action this weekend as they welcome Colchester United to Vale Park and Scott Brown is expecting a tough test against the team he claims to be the best he's played all season.

The Valiants have had a positive few weeks and will have their tails up heading into this weekend's tie with promotion-chasing Colchester.

Brown proved once again how vital he is to this Port Vale team on Tuesday night, following his penalty shoot-out heroics to help The Valiants progress to the Quarter Final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

However, he is well aware of the threat this Saturday's opponents pose as he looks forward to what will be a difficult test against The U's.

He said: "For me, they are the best team we've played this year. We went down there on the second game of the season and lost 2-0 but it could've been a lot more.

"You look at their starting 11 and you'd take a lot of them from there and then they have three or four on the bench that would get into most teams in League Two at least.

"They're a top team with a good budget, good manager and they play some really good football, so to get anything out of the game tomorrow we'll have to put in a top performance."

Vale's number one has also claimed there is a 'buzzing' atmosphere around the team following two impressive results over the past few weeks.

A resolute 1-1 draw with table-toppers Lincoln City set the ball rolling before a win via penalties over League One outfit Shrewsbury Town has seemed to have lifted spirits within the Vale net.

Brown believes these results have come just in time and he has shared his though on the Checkatrade Trophy Quarter Final draw.

He said: "Although it was a draw, we won on penalties and it's great to get through to the next round.

"Everyone was watching the draw last night waiting to see who we got so it's great to get through. The lads are buzzing that we've had two decent results so we're now looking forward to tomorrow's game.

"I thought Portsmouth may have been an easier draw because they're in the FA Cup and they're going high in the league whereas Bristol Rovers haven't got a lot to play for. They're going to be safe in League One so they'll put a really strong team out.
