Match Report | Walsall Wood 0-5 Port Vale FC Women

30 May 2024

The Valiants confirmed their title success and unbeaten season in style with a thumping win in Walsall

In the opening seven minutes, Macy Isherwood had a chance to open the scoring, but the opposition’s keeper saved her first effort as her follow-up was over the bar.

Three minutes later Olivia Grocott burst through the last line of defence to put her through on goal as she slotted the ball past the keeper and gave the Vale the lead.

Under a quarter of an hour played and the Valiants doubled the advantage through Jess Smith after Sian McHugh’s whipped cross was fumbled by the keeper and Smith arrived to tap the ball home.

The match experienced its first stoppage of play when Walsall’s keeper went down after Vale’s second and with the home side already with eight players there was worry that an outfield player would have to fill the role in between the goal frame.

Shortly after the restart, in the 26th minute, Grocott’s effort on goal from a tight angle after rounding the keeper bounced off the left post and Isherwood capitalised by picking up the loose ball and squaring it for Erin Moreton-Powell to smash into the empty net.

After the half-hour mark, Grocott tried her luck from range as a low and hard-driven shot nestled in the bottom left-hand corner that gave Vale their fourth.

Unfortunately for the opponents their goalkeeper again went down from their early injury concern and Walsall Wood was forced to take their keeper off as an outfield player filled in for them.

Before the break, another Walsall Wood player went down with injury concerns and with the opponents down to seven already another subbed player would bring about the game’s conclusion.

The game continued as the Walsall Wood player carried on and six minutes after half-time Grocott secured a hat trick as Sophie Garratt played her through and she fired past the keeper.

However, injury concerns for Walsall Wood occurred again and with their player coming off the referee blew the full-time whistle as the Valiants were confirmed as league title winners.

The Valiants’ first place in the league earns them automatic promotion to the WMRWFL Premier Division which is the fifth tier of women’s football in the country.
