Vacancy | Head of Academy

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Port Vale Football Club Academy for an experienced and strategically minded individual to join the Academy as its Head.

Location: Vale Park, Burslem, SOT

Reports to: Board of Directors

Internal Liaison: Players, Parents / Guardians, Academy Coaches, Academy Players, Academy Manager, Head of Coaching, Director of Football, CEO

External Liaison: Universities / Colleges, Academies in other clubs, bodies such as EFL, Premier League, LFE, FA 


Leading the established Academy team, you’ll be responsible for the vision and support strategy of the academy alongside the operational and performance plans to ensure the deliver of said strategic objectives.


  • Utilise the club strategy to plan future Academy Strategy
  • Manage the creation and implementation of an operational plan that reflects the strategy and vision to ensure alignment with the Club’s philosophy
  • Facilitate the development of the Academy’s coaching philosophy and curriculum
  • Own the financial management / operations and performance of the Academy
  • Drive positive change and manage this proactively and effectively
  • Ongoing management, development and growth of Academy team
    • Performance management
    • Recruitment
  • Support player progression through the system
  • Be an advocate for the Academy and its reputation both internally and externally
    • Ensure regular contact and relationships internally with the CEO, Director of Football, Tech Director, First Team Managers and Owners
    • Have an approachable presence at matches / training and be available to converse with parents


The successful applicant will have:

  • A strong background in an elite performance sports environment or a high performing business environment
  • Experience leading and managing people
  • Experience of a role which involves education / pedagogy or working with young people would be advantageous
  • Knowledge and or understanding of the inner running of a football club, how elite players are developed or the process of learning in coaches


Beneficial / Desirable:

  • A qualification in football
    • Level 3 (UEFA B), Level 4 (UEFA A), Level 5 (Pro) License
  • A coaching / Mentoring qualification
  • FA Advanced Youth Award
  • Qualification in Education i.e., PGCE, MSc Pedagogy etc.
  • Be degree educated, ideally in Sports Science or Business
