Vale were giving away too many free kicks twenty yards or so from goal and the home side almost capitalised on 40 minutes when Michael Bostwick received a short pass and drove the ball through a sea of bodies, but Alnwick saw it clearly and got down to his right to make the save.

Six minutes after the interval the home side should have gone in front when Moncur found space inside the Vale box and slid the ball back into the path of Hughes, whose first time shot was well saved by Alnwick.
Vale were having a lot of the ball in the second half without really threatening Peterborough, who still looked the more likely of the two to get the next goal.
The home side were playing some great football at times and only they will know how they failed to put one of the several chances they created away.
