Local School Went To Regional Final At Shrewsbury

Burslem-based secondary school Haywood Academy represented Port Vale at a regional football tournament held at Shrewsbury Town last month.

The Academy took part in the Football League Girls Cup Under-13 and faced Crewe Alexandra, Shrewsbury Town, Coventry City and Birmingham City.

They played extremely well with Megan Hunt finishing as their top scorer with an impressive haul of seven goals.

As a reward for their efforts, the players were presented with trophies by Valiants manager Rob Page at Vale Park last week.

Their coach, Miss Carruthers, told port-vale.co.uk: “This was a great opportunity for the girls to represent their school and Port Vale, who were great in providing the girls with trophies.

“They got to meet Rob Page and the girls are to attend a Port Vale fixture, which they are very excited about as well.”

Chris Taylor, Head of Education at Port Vale, added: "I was impressed by the girls' enthusiasm and ability. Coaches from other clubs in the Midlands commented on Megan's technical ability and rated her as one of the best players at the tournament.

"Port Vale continues to work in partnership with the Haywood Academy and look forward to further links when their new Sixth Form is launched in Burslem town centre in September."
