Neill Collins gave the hosts the lead with a darting header after 12 minutes.
It went from bad to worse for the Valiants as defender Daniel Jones received two yellow card within the space of 10 minutes to leave Vale with 10-men for the remaining 70 minutes.
Vale reshuffled after Jones' sending off and Richard Duffy replaced Jennison Myrie-Williams.
With five minutes to play of the first-half Vale were handed a lifeline after Adams Yates' hopeful cross found its way past George Long into the back of the net.
Vale battled through the second-half with 10-men and for large parts looked likely to grab an unlikely winner but with 15 minutes remaining Michael Doyle powered home what proved to be the winner from close-range.
