Robertson ready for Walsall

5 August 2013

Defender wants to concentrate on Vale

We have to take it in our stride, that’s the message from defender Chris Robertson as Vale look to build on a promising opening day draw against Brentford by turning their attention to the Capital One first-round clash with Walsall on Tuesday (19.45).

The 27-year-old central defender told Valiant Player: “They beat Tranmere 3-1 on Saturday, we have got to take it in our stride, it doesn’t matter what team they put out we will concentrate on ourselves and worry about what we want to do and where we want to go.”

Brentford arrived at Vale Park on Saturday with a favourites tag attached, but former Preston North End defender Robertson is keen to build and improve on what was a unified performance from the Valiants.

“It is good in a way that we have got a game tomorrow night so we can improve again and use that game to try and improve and get more of an understanding.

“Getting the first game out the way on Saturday was good, getting a point on the board,” Robertson said.

Robertson, who stands at just over 6ft 3in has been a physical presence in Vale’s box but also the oppositions. Three goals in pre-season is an excellent return for a defender, but despite his goal-scoring exploits Robertson was quick to point out his defensive requirements.

He said: “The main thing is I am a defender, I want to keep clean sheets and want to defend but if I get a chance to score then I’ll go up there and I’ll get in the box and try and add a few to my name.”

When people look at Vale and goals scored, players such as Tom Pope, Gavin Tomlin and Lee Hughes comes to mind but for Robertson the goals need to be shared around to help ease the burden on the strikers.

“You can’t rely on just one or two people, if they aren’t doing it then you’ll be struggling so everyone has got to play to their strengths in a way and if we can all have a share of the goals, you can’t stop 11 players can you?”
