Marland and Beesley also went close before Walsall pressed for an equaliser. Hobbis and Flanagan both had efforts saved by Ryan Boot in the Vale goal, and Smith and Morris both had very good games at the back.
In the second round the Vale will be away to either Tranmere Rovers or Bury.
