Last Time We Met Grimsby Town

8 March 2018

Port Vale make the trip to Blundell Park on Saturday to face Grimsby Town in Sky Bet League Two, but what happened last time we came up against the Mariners?

In what was Neil Aspin’s first game as Vale manager, Tom Pope fired his side ahead in Burslem after he pounced on a loose ball to tap home on 39 minutes.

However, following the restart, it was the visiting outfit that took control of proceedings. Sam Jones was on hand to level things up after 51 minutes as he headed beyond Kelle Roos from a corner.

Siriki Dembele level then scored the decisive goal of the afternoon, rounding Roos before slotting into an unguarded net with 67 minutes on the clock.

The Valiants could have earned a share of the spoils late on, but David Worrall and Nathan Smith were unable to prevent a 2-1 defeat as they both saw opportunitues go begging in the final moments.

Our last meeting with Grimsby away from home came back in 2011 and it was the Mariners who scored the only goal of the game to progress in the FA Cup.

You have to go back to 2009 to find Vale’s last league trip to DN31, with goals from Rob Taylor and Sean Rigg enough to secure all three points for Micky Adams’ men in a 2-1 win.
