Adam Yates joined the Valiants in July 2009 on a free transfer from Morecambe. The right back, who was brought up locally, started his career at local rivals, Crewe Alexandra, where he was a product of their academy. He scored his first goal for Vale with a stunning strike from outside the box against Stevenage in the FA Cup in 2009.

The defender has also played for Halifax (loan), Leek Town and Burton Albion (loan) and helped Morecambe into the Football League in 2007. Yates made 28 appearances for the Valiants last season, scoring one goal earning himself a new one-year contract to stay in Burslem.

Yates joined Northampton Town on a months loan on the 24th August where he played three times for the Cobblers, the 32-year-old returned to the Vale matchday squad in the 1-0 defeat away at Southend United on the 10th October.
