Overview of Saltergate:

Saltergate has been open since 1871 and was incorporated into a cricket ground in its early days. The ground consists of two covered, seated, side stands, and standing terraces behind the goals. The Main Stand, housing all the offices, is an old, wooden structure.

Opposite is the much smaller Compton Street Terrace which had seats installed in 2002.

The Spion Kop, for the home fans, is behind one goal; the Cross Street End behind the other goal is for away fans.

Plans are in hand for a new 11,000 seater stadium about one mile away.

Where the Valiants will be housed:

The Vale fans will primarily be standing on the uncovered, 1,400 capacity, Cross Street Terrace bringing back memories to many fans of how football used to be watched at all grounds in the "good old days." There is a small section at one end of the Main Stand allocated to the visiting supporters who like to watch their football peering round posts and seated on benches reminiscent of assemblies in primary schools!

WHERE to eat:

To find the nearest chippy, the West Bars Fish & Chip Diner, go along St Margaret's Drive outside the ground, turn right onto Saltergate, next left onto Rutland Road, and when you reach the roundabout you will see the chippy.

The next closest is the Chatsworth Fish Bar and is found by following the above directions, but bearing right at the round about and you will find it along the A619, Chatsworth Road. There is also a KFC on Chatsworth Road.

WHERE TO DRINK:

The closest pub to the ground is the Industry Inn, virtually across the road - go along St Margaret's Drive, right into Cross Street, left onto Queens Street, the pub is then in view. The Chesterfield Arms is also recommended for visiting supporters.

There are many more pubs a short walk away towards the town centre.
