Pre-Match Chat - Shrewsbury

Posted on: Fri 03 Feb 2012

Vale make the short trip across the county border into Shropshire on Saturday in a more confident mood following two successive defeats, as they travel to face high flying Shrewsbury Town.

Vale will be hoping to avenge a 3-2 home defeat back in September, but are under no illusions as to the size of the task facing them.

Vale found themselves two goals down after just a quarter of an hour that day and they had a mountain to climb to get back into the game.

Bane Williamson gave Vale a glimmer of hope when he hit his first ever League goal on 26 minutes, only for Lionel Ainsworth to restore the visitors lead early in the second half.

Vale pulled another goal back nine minutes from time when Williamson grabbed his second, but they couldn't prevent the visitors from securing their first win at Vale park since 1978.

Vale have a decent record at the Greenhous Meadow, but Micky Adams must take an injury-hit side there on Saturday to face an in-form Shrewsbury outfit.

Graham Turner's side are so far unbeaten on home soil this season, having won ten of their opening 13 home fixtures, so Vale face a daunting task.

Despite Shrewsbury's home record and Vale's injury situation, boss Micky Adams doesn't fear a trip to the Greenhouse, despite tipping them to finish in the top three.

Vale have a decent record there to date, having won two and drawn one of their three encounters between the two sides in Shropshire.

Last Season's action-packed affair saw the home side hit the crossbar early on in the game, but it was Vale who got their noses in front when Marc Richards headed home a cross from Kris Taylor.

The home side hit back immediately when Lionel Ainsworth drilled the ball inside Chris Martin's left upright.

The home side must have thought hey had won the game when James Collins put them n front in the 71st minute, only for Marc Richards to level ten minutes later from the spot after Tom Pope had been upended in the box.

Vale fans won't mind if Saturday's game is nowhere near entertaining if Vale can manage to snatch a similar result, but of course it will be a huge ask.

Gareth Owen and Lee Collins are once again ruled out, but Tom Pope is expected to be in the squad. Micky Adams will keep everybody guessing as to whether or not Pope will start.
