IRISH ROVING: MERVUE UNITED

Posted on: Fri 23 Jul 2010

Galway has alot to offer people. Helpful locals, plenty of sports in a green and pleasant land. Guinness, soft Irish music and deserted beaches so quaint its a mystery they aren't swarmed in people.  Micky Adams is a man on a mission and his experiences in Ireland continue to convince any non believers that Vale will have a season to look forward to by 2011. Tonight's hosts Mervue United in the surroundings of Terryland Park Galway were a game, keen and eager  side with no little ability. They weren't going to lie down, friendly or not and often asked the questions of the visitors from England. However Vale, an organised outfit which while didn't find the crisp interplay evident against Athlone, were still impressive enough to get people thinking the coming season could be worth a Season Ticket for Burslem factoring in onto the family budget spreadsheet.

A second half strike from Kris Taylor converted from close range was enough to divide the sides. Trees weren't torn up, mountains weren't climbed, but optimism reigned supreme and for the hardy band of far flung followers a pint of Guinness would be raised not in celebration but just in a mild contentment that matters maybe coming together. The jigsaw appeared to have all its pieces after Vale's tour in Ireland continued  to suggest it added credance to their growing reputation that next season Vale would be one of the sides to beat in this division.

The manager gave one side an hour before ringing the changes but when he did everyone proved they know their places and they know their job. One hopes that an injury to a young Mervue player which looked nasty througn no fault of anyone is not a serious as it first appeared. Good luck to him and the hosts who didn't disgrace by any stretch of the imagination.

Credit Mervue and its staff who once again afforded the same red carpet to all people Vale in the same way Athlone had done on Tuesday night. Micky was right about Ireland. No frills but no hassle and just welcoming faces in a place that appreciates those from across a very narrow stream of water.

Final Score Mervue United 0 Port Vale 1

Attendance 160 including 35ish visitors and four flags!
