Mark Chamberlain

Posted on: Mon 03 Oct 2011
The younger brother of another former Vale favourite, Neville, Mark was a fast and skilful winger who soon became a favourite of the Vale Park faithful.

An England Schoolboy and under 21 international, Mark went on to win eight full caps, but many felt he ought to have done even better.

He came through the ranks at Vale and eventually made his full first team debut towards the end of the 1978/79 season against Barnsley.

An ever-present during the 1981/82 season, Mark was sold to neighbours Stoke City in August 1982, along with young goalkeeper Mark Harrison for a combined fee of £180,000.

He later joined Sheffield Wednesday and eventually enjoyed spells at Portsmouth, Brighton and Exeter before hanging up his boots. He worked as a youth coach at Portsmouth until leaving in 2009. His son Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was a first team squad member at Southampton before joining Arsenal for £15 million in Aug 2011.
