Paterson Reflects on Bristol Rovers

27 September 2016

Martin Paterson scored his first goal for the club in Saturday’s defeat to Bristol Rovers.

Despite taking the lead in the first half, the Valiant’s fell to their third away defeat of the season, extending their poor away form.

Paterson spoke exclusively to Valiant PlayerHD after the game.

“We only have ourselves to blame really. With respect, we dominated the game in the first half and possibly should have created more chances, and put our foot down when the chance presented itself.

“But we didn’t, and they scored right on the break of half-time, and then it was difficult for us, because they got themselves on top and started playing their direct game.

“We’re really disappointed, but we have talented players. Okay we’ve lost today but we are desperate to bounce back on Tuesday”, he continued.

On a side-note, Paterson notched his first goal for the Burslem club, but modestly turned attention away from his own personal achievement:

“It’s nice to score goals, I was delighted, but in the end it’s all about the team and the three points. The opportunity was there for us today and we didn’t make it count, we’re disappointed and I am too.”

Furthermore, due to the lack of a pre-season, the 29 year-old is still working his way up to full fitness, but feels he is on the right track:

“I’m working hard to get myself into a good condition. I’m keeping myself fit and working really hard, and I’m hoping this hard work will pay off going into the season.”

Port Vale will be looking to carry on their 100% record at home and make-up for their defeat on Saturday when Millwall visit Vale Park on Tuesday.

The Stoke-born Northern Irishman expects a fight on their hands come Tuesday:

“It will be a tough game, this league is tough, and Millwall are doing well and we know it will be a difficult game. But we have a sour taste in our mouths with this defeat and we will be raring to go on Tuesday.”
