Micky takes positives from defeat

Despite going do two-one to Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers last night, Micky Adams was pleased with the overall performance and says Vale were unfortunate not to get something from the game.

On saying that, there were also disappointing aspects of Vale’s performance and the manager knows Vale still have work to do on the training ground.

He said: “There were a lot of positives to take from the performance. We were obviously disappointed to lose the game, because winning becomes a habit, as we have said before.

“I think looking at the chances created and the chances they have had, we were well on top in that respect, but ultimately, it’s a results game.

“Their goalkeeper made some great saves and he was in the right place at the right time. There was possibly some poor finishing, but at least we have created the chances.

“We got done on a set-piece, which doesn’t please me at all and that’s something we need to tighten up on before the first league game of the season. Ultimately we lost the game, but we deserved to get something out of it.

“We will take the positives out of it and try and work on some of the defensive frailties, but in general I am very, very pleased.”

The manager isn’t far off knowing what his starting line-up for the opening league game is likely to be, but there are two more games for one or two of the players to make a case for inclusion.

He said: “In my head I am reasonably certain of ninety per cent of the team. There are still possibly one or two places up for grabs.

“But we will use the next two games to have a look at everybody again and I will decide what the best eleven is going to be come Walsall.”
