Leek Town 2 Port Vale 5
Gavin Tomlin was the star of the show with a first half hat trick, but Tom Pope also scored twice as the Vale completed a 5-2 win over Leek Town.
The first goal came in the 9th minute. A long ball from the right was flicked on by Pope and Tomlin was on hand to lob the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Vale doubled their advantage in the 14th minute. Pope and Tomlin linked up well together with Tomlin taking the ball forward before sliding it under the keeper.
Two minutes later Leek were back in it when they pulled a goal back. John Johnston did well down the right and his low cross found Dan Shelley running in at the far post to knock the ball into the roof of the net.
Pope fired over from five yards before Vale gained the comfort of a third goal in the 41st minute. A cross from the right by Chris Birchall struck a defender on the hand and a penalty was awarded. Tomlin smashed the ball home to complete a 32 minute hat trick.
Leek pulled a goal back in the first minute of the second half. Johnston again did well on the right and his cross saw Andy Kinsey head goalwards and although Neal made a great save the ball looped up to the far post where Tim Grice nodded home.
In the 68th minute Vale extended their lead once again. Kaid Mohamed picked the ball up on the halfway line and went on a mazy run to the byeline leaving defenders in his wake, and his cross was turned in by Pope from five yards.
Vale scored again nine minutes from time. Tomlin burst clear on the right, beating a couple of defenders before sending over a low cross that Pope subsequently turned into the net.
